Rob: This spring, students from across the state competed in a contest producing some interesting video pieces on the environment. Earlier, I sat down with two teams of young filmmakers to learn more. So, guys, why did you choose recycling for your video project? Well, we chose recycling because we believe that most kids our age just try to be oblivious about it and just say, I’m just one kid, you know, and just kind of forget about it; most of the time it’s just overlooked; and so we wanted to stress that it is important, and it’s just simple, just recycle. Rob: Now, your project at Francis Tuttle was I would say, maybe a bigger issue or more of a global issue, and that is global warming. Why did you choose it? Really, when we were told to think of an environmental cause to do a video about, it was really the first thing that we thought of, global warming. I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that it’s in the news so much right now, and we’re hearing a lot about it from all the politicians, and a lot of people are thinking about upcoming elections and what those candidates are going to do about the environment. So, it was something that we thought we both needed to learn more about, and especially kids our age, because a lot of us are about to be able to vote. And, so I think it’s just something that’s a big issue right now that everyone needs to know about. Yeah, we wanted something like, more serious, something that’s going to affect us in the future. Yeah, cause when we’re adults, that’s what’s going to be going on, still; so, we need to know about it now and get started. Rob: Yeah, it’s certainly an issue that affects your generation. Let’s go ahead and take a look at the first project here. I think it’s a really well done piece, and let’s go ahead and see how it starts. Someone once asked me, why should I recycle? Is it just a waste of time? Is it to defend our right to a healthy environment? To protect the earth’s magnificent places. To safeguard our planet’s amazing wildlife. Local recycling centers, like this, make it easy to make a difference. Recycled material can return to the market, in as little as 30 days. Why wait? It’s time for me to do my part. Rob: Well, guys, you make some very good points. What do you want people to take away from this video? We really wanted people to see how easy it is. Recycling, it’s important; but it’s so simple. That’s really what it was. Some people just say, I’m just one person, like I won’t make a difference if I recycle; but if more people recycle and more people come together, that’s when you really make a difference. It’s really up to the people to make a difference. Rob: Yeah, well, certainly. We’ll take it all to heart. Now, let’s go ahead and take a look at the global warming video. Massive heat waves. Severe droughts. Devastating storms. Global warming. Some think that the consequences won’t hit us for another 30 years or more. It won’t even affect you, right? Well, think about who it will affect. I take pictures of nature, because when I’m a grown-up, I don’t know how it will be like. Rob: Well, I think both of you ought to be commended for taking this very wide, broad issue and localizing it. Thank you. I think that we both find it really important, especially during these times; because, we’re hearing a lot about it in the news, you know, and a lot of politicians are discussing it in regards to the upcoming election; and we’re getting to the point where we’re about old enough to vote, and I think that when you hear so much about it, and so many people honestly don’t really know the basic facts, it’s kind of sad. And when we look to the future, our generation is going to have to deal with this a lot. It’s something we’re going to keep struggling with, and for older generations, it’s what they’re leaving for their kids, behind. So, it’s important that people don’t just, you know, listen and hear about global warming and kind of, like, let it pass by. It’s important to know what’s really going on, because it’s our whole world that’s being affected. And we want to show a lot of things that could help global warming, like, things that you do on a daily basis, such as, you know, the lights, or like showering or carpooling, all that stuff that would help us in the future. Rob: Well, congratulations to you all for doing some work that not only is important, but very, very well done.
