Rob: If you want to take advantage of all this locally grown produce, it’s as easy as taking a trip to a local farmers’ market. Joining me is Justin Whitmore who heads up Oklahoma’s Department of Agriculture Farmers’ Market Program. Well, Justin, it seems like there’s plenty of reasons to head out to a farmers market these days. Justin Whitmore: Yeah, there really is. At the farmers market you can get a lot of good quality produce that’s grown right here in the state. You get to meet the people who grew it, and it’s good to eat. Rob: Yeah, and with the increased costs of transportation, the prices at farmers markets are very, very competitive. Whitmore: Yes, with increased fuel prices, shipping produce in from other states is getting to be real costly, and the local farmers are becoming a lot more competitive because of that. Rob: Now it seems as if we’re seeing one on almost every street corner. Have they grown in recent years? Whitmore: Yes, we’ve got a new record high number of farmers markets that are registered with the state this year. We have 47 registered farmers markets in the state. Forty-three of those are 100 percent Oklahoma grown farmers markets. Rob: Now if someone would like to visit one, what do they need to do? Whitmore: All they need to do is go to the web site, www.OkGrown.com and we have a list of all the different farmers markets and when they meet and what times. Rob: And easy to pick up some good stuff, and if you want to find that web site, we have a link on our web site at OkHorizon.com.
