Rob: It's easy to take for granted something as simple as making dinner, but for those with disabilities, mundane, every day tasks can be nearly impossible. Oklahoma’s league for the blind works with those who are visually impaired to attain their vision of independence. As Quinn Tran shows us, it’s help that goes from the home to the work place. Quinn Tran: Imagine. Music. Quinn: Imagine seeing the beauties of life. Music. Quinn: And one day, all of it, becomes just a blur. Music. Quinn: Or even worse, seeing none of it at all. Glenda Farnum: There’s this total…that your life is over. Quinn: Glenda Farnum knows first hand. She’s vision impaired and now helps others at the Oklahoma League for the Blind, the OLB. Glenda: With our services and our programs, we can make sure that someone’s life isn’t over. Quinn: It’s a non-profit organization established in 1949. OLB provides children with camps and programs, for adults, training and employment. Mike Dunn gets to work with little or no help. Mike Dunn: Hi there. Howdy stranger. Quinn: Mike was born pre-mature. Mike: I don’t know what it’s like to be able to see. Quinn: His only vision, knowing when daytime turns to night. Mike: I’ve had some people say, ask me if I ever miss being able to see. I say, well how can miss what you never had? Quinn: At the Oklahoma League for the Blind, Mike has been an employee for nearly thirty years. Mike works with sharp blades. The OLB provided him with the tools and training to learn his craft. Mike: My main job is making wheel chocks. I run a Dato saw. Take the chocks and put them up against the stop. It has two saws on them. When they come forward, I can tell that they are all the way out because when the saw blades are turning, I feel the air from it. And if they don’t go back, I can tell it and I know not to stick my hands up there. Quinn: Like many who are born blind, they’ve been told their lives are limited. Mike has proved that boundaries can be bent. Mike: We’re just no different from a sighted person except we just can’t see. I take pride in my work; try to do it to the best of my ability. It’s a place where I can go to work and I feel like I achieve something. Quinn: The Oklahoma League for the Blind. Imagine. Inspire. Independence.
